Winter Wonderland in Lake Placid
There’s nothing like taking a break in mid winter for a vacation. We are not afraid of snowy places where we can join the winter fun, even though we reside near snowy Boston.
This year’s vacation we decided to travel to the Adirondack Mountains of NY in February! ….YUP! Up in the mountains of New York, all the way to Lake Placid. Here was the home of the Winter Olympics of 1932 and 1980. Naturally I wore a signature hat, my favorite – a black mink hat ALA Audrey Hepburn style.
Our downtown lodging landed us at the Golden Arrow resort, within walking distance of the shops, stocked with winter’s luxuries. We chose a “deluxe” room with a view of Mirror Lake so we could watch the winter skating and lake activities from our balcony, yet still sit by a fire on couch and enjoy the incredible view of “Whiteface Mountain”.
Our first romantic night was dinner at Mirror Lake Inn in at “The View” restaurant. The food was exquisite. Sitting at the isolated table was a dreamy experience and the view from the windows was spectacular. Since I’m newly married, I, of course happen to be madly in love with and appreciating the alone time with my husband.
We ice skated on the lake just outside our hotel both during the day and night, while the snow sparkled and twinkled against the lights. This experience reminded me of Hans Brinker and the silver skates, holding hands and skating along the carved out paths on the enchanting lake. We could skate from hotel to restaurants all along the pathways.
We visited the Olympic museum and took a sleigh ride through the snow, which was exhilarating but extremely cold.
One of our shopping treasures purchased was winter “glog” – a wine, which when warmed, works from the inside to chase the chill away.
Meanwhile back in Boston winter storms were raging and burying our friends with record snowfalls – Boston –As of 7 pm EDT on March 15, the National Weather Service in Boston announced that Boston Logan Airport received 108.6 inches of snow, officially making the 2014-2015 season the all time snowiest season for the city. In the last 21 years.
In the evenings we sat outside the hotel, at the lake by the fire to warm, since the temps were subzero in Lake Placid. When we first arrived at the tiny hamlet town of Lake Placid the center was quaint and the temperature in my car read -7 degrees.
Our sleigh ride was the chilly end to our vacation, however romantic we needed to sit close to warm each other. Wonderful vacation, only to return to record snowfall in Boston and shovel the driveway once again.
